Penang govt to meet with fisheries board on Kuala Juru shrimp farm project, says exco member

GEORGE TOWN: The state government will meet the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil to discuss the protest by Kuala Juru fishermen who were against the planned shrimp farm project near Kampung Kuala Juru.

State agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said he has contacted Muhammad Faiz to discuss the matter and to harmonise the situation.

“The site that came under protest recently was actually a site for housing development and the landowner was LKIM.

“I have contacted Muhammad Faiz and we will try to discuss it for the people concerned,” he said.

He however said the shrimp project has so far been ordered to stop and he and LKIM would hold a meeting with the fishermen from the area soon.

On Tuesday (Sept 12), fishermen from Kampung Kuala Juru staged a protest over the shrimp farm project that was alleged to be built on land originally slated for a housing project for fishermen in the area.

The fishermen claimed that LKIM had promised to help the fishermen by building a housing project for them 25 years ago.

However, they said after more than two decades, the housing project failed to materialise as promised.

They also claimed that the site was encroached by an unidentified company which cleared nearly 11ha of land to carry out shrimp farming activities.
