PUTRAJAYA: Senior police officer Comm Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali (pic) has been made the director-general of the upcoming Malaysia Checkpoints and Border Agency (MCBA).
The single border agency will have three main objectives: to coordinate the functions of agencies currently stationed at entry points, improve the existing delivery system and uphold integrity.
Legislation for the establishment of MCBA is expected to be tabled in Parliament in March.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Comm Hazani, who was Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) director, was chosen for his experience and leadership.
“I am confident he will be able to lead this new agency successfully,” he told reporters during a special press conference at the ministry headquarters yesterday.
“After the legislation is tabled, we can start coordinating among the agencies under MCBA,” he said.
Saifuddin said Comm Hazani also helped form the Eastern Sabah Security Command after the Lahad Datu intrusion.
“As KDNKA director, he had more than 20,000 personnel and officers under him,” Saifuddin said.
Meanwhile, Comm Hazani said on his appointment: “It is a new experience for me but I will do my very best. I cherish this new challenge.”
It is learnt the KDNKA director post remains vacant.
It was previously reported that the Cabinet had chosen the Home Ministry to lead the implementation of the single border agency at the country’s 141 entry points.
During the tabling of Budget 2024, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government would set up a single border agency and allocate some RM20mil for the maintenance, repair and acquisition of assets at all international borders of the country.
