Floods: Victims in Penampang get RM158,000 aid

KOTA KINABALU: Flood victims have received aid from the Prime Minister’s office soon after a RM158,000 allocation was given to the Penampang constituency.

This comes after the Prime Minister's senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin visited Penampang to hand over financial assistance to flood victims on Thursday (July 18).

The allocation included RM10,000 each to the police and Fire and Rescue Department while the remaining funds would be distributed to 138 affected individuals or households.

The June 30 flood has been dubbed one of the worst since 1999, resulting in the death of a woman, the loss of numerous pets and livestock, and affecting thousands of families. The disaster caused extensive damage to homes, vehicles, and other properties.

Other than Penampang, districts like Putatan, Tamparuli, Tuaran, Menggatal and Kiulu were also badly hit.

Shamsul said apart from homes, even the Penampang police station wasn’t spared from the annual flooding and incurring high repair costs.

"This year, the losses were almost RM700,000," added Shamsul.
