102 undocumented migrants held in Negri raids

SEREMBAN: The Immigration Department has detained 102 undocumented foreigners in raids here and in Jelebu.

Negri Sembilan Immigration director Kennith Tan Aik Kiang said the raids were carried out in 18 areas such as construction sites, entertainment outlets, restaurants, shophouses and residential areas.

"My officers screened 127 foreigners during the 21-hour operation which started on Tuesday (July 23) morning.

"Apart from not having a valid work pass and overstaying, some of them did not have any identification documents on them," he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 24).

Tan said the operation was carried out following information from the public.

He said the detainees, aged between 17 and 55, comprised 32 Bangladeshis, 26 Indonesians, 20 Thais, 13 China nationals, five Indian nationals, five Pakistanis and one Myanmarese.

Twenty-nine were women, he added.

Tan said the detainees would be investigated for offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Immigration Rules 1963 and the Passport Act 1966.

"During a raid at a construction site, some of the migrants tried to run away but were detained.

"Some tried to hide in the buildings and surrounding jungle but were also caught," he said, adding that none of the detainees was injured.

Tan said the undocumented migrants were later sent to the Immigration depot in Lenggeng for his officers to wrap up investigations.

He said 11 notices were also issued to employers and caretakers of premises where they were caught to assist in investigations.

"We will act against anyone found to have harboured or hired any of the undocumented foreigners.

"Also, we hope the public continues to assist us by providing information on the presence of these foreigners or any other suspicious activity in and around their neighbourhood," he added.
