Heart ops come to a halt

Electrical issues at Serdang Heart Centre to blame

PETALING JAYA: Heart surgeries at Serdang Heart Centre have ground to a halt again, slightly over a month after its four non-functional operating theatres underwent major repair works.

Sources said the operating theatres at the new wing had to be closed for three weeks, beginning Monday.

“There were multiple electrical issues. We had to close down the operating theatres for inspection and repairs.

“We are moving back to the old building,” a source said.

The closure affected some 50 patients scheduled for heart surgeries. “There are another 1,000 on the waiting list,” said the source, adding that all surgeries would be performed at the hospital’s old building for now.

Another source said the closure could be due to tripped circuit breakers.

The Star reported on May 14 that maintenance issues at the 19-month-old cardiac facility in Hospital Serdang had caused its four operating theatres to be unusable, resulting in a long waiting list of over 1,000 patients.

At that time, only one of the operating theatres in the hospital’s old building was functioning.

The shut down was a result of maintenance problems, particularly air-conditioning issues.

Since June 5, three of the operating theatres have been put to use.

“All issues related to the temperature and humidity have been resolved,” Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad announced on his Facebook two days later.

The RM546mil facility began operations in December 2022. It is one of the country’s primary cardiology centres, receiving referrals from all over the nation.
