University students also duped by scammers to open mule account, says IGP

SHAH ALAM: University students have also fallen victim unknowingly as mule account holders, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

Following the revelation by the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department that 208,000 mule accounts have been identified and were linked to commercial and online crimes, the Inspector-General of Police said students had also unknowingly handed over their account details to be used as mule accounts.

He said this was not a new development and that he had seen cases of students being mule account holders since his stint in Perak.

"We believe that some of them are victims of scams and are not voluntarily giving their accounts to these scammers," he told reporters after attending the passing out parade for the Police Volunteer Reserve Corps at Universiti Teknologi Mara here on Thursday (Aug 15).
