JOHOR BARU: A public university student pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to sexually assaulting a teenage girl last year.

The accused, Muhammad Amirul Akmal Kamarulzaman, 29, made the plea after the charge was read to him in front of Judge Hazeelia Muhammad on Sunday (Dec 1).

According to the charge sheet, the accused had assaulted the 15-year-old girl by kissing her lips and touching the victim’s private parts.

The act was allegedly committed at a house in Jalan Panglin, Taman Perling, Johor Baru, between April and May last year.

The offence was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum of 20 years imprisonment and also whipping upon conviction.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farah Wahida Shahudin, while the accused was represented by Mazri Mohamed.

Nur Farah Wahida requested bail to be set at RM20,000 with one surety along with additional terms for the accused not to disturb the victim and any witnesses to the case.

The accused is also required to hand over his international passport to the court and report himself once every month to the nearest police station.

Mazri, in mitigation, requested a lower bail as the accused is the eldest of four siblings and is supported by her mother, who works as an administrative assistant at a school with a monthly income of RM2,000.

The court set bail at RM10,000 with two sureties along with the additional terms.

The court also set Dec 5 for the case's next mention. The accused had posted bail.
