More flood victims in East Coast and Johor relocated to temporary relief centres


KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in the East Coast and Johor worsened on Tuesday, with an increasing number of victims being relocated to Temporary Relief Centres. Meanwhile, the situation in Perak is improving, and Melaka has fully recovered.

In TERENGGANU, the number of victims rose to 5,198 from 1,273 families housed in 28 relief centres as of 8pm, compared to 4,904 victims earlier in the afternoon.

The Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that Kemaman remains the most affected district, with 4,850 individuals from 1,184 families seeking shelter at 20 relief centres. Meanwhile, in Dungun, 348 victims from 89 families are housed in eight relief centres that started operating at 10am Tuesday (Dec 10).

According to the Public Info Banjir portal of the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID), water levels in Sungai Tebak at Jambatan Tebak, Kemaman, have exceeded the danger level.

Additionally, Sungai Dungun at Kuala Jengal and Sungai Kemaman at Jambatan Air Putih, Rumah Pam Paya Paman, and Sungai Tumpat in Kampung Baru Kemasik, Kemaman, have all surpassed warning levels.

In KELANTAN, the number of victims increased to 288 from 71 families taking refuge at three relief centres in the Gua Musang district, compared to 180 earlier in the day.

The Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal reported that the three relief centres include Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Chiku 7 (housing 219 victims from 54 families), Dewan Orang Ramai Batu 6 (31 victims from eight families), and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Limau Kasturi 1 (38 victims from nine families).

In PAHANG, the number of flood victims rose slightly to 160 from 46 families in six relief centres in the Maran district, up from 150 earlier Tuesday.

In JOHOR, a slight increase in victims was also recorded, with 155 individuals from 41 families compared to 150 earlier.

Johor Disaster Management Committee Chairman, Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani, said that in Segamat, two relief centres are operational: Balai Raya Kampung Batu Badak shelters 40 victims, and Dewan Komuniti Kampung Tasek houses 45. Meanwhile, in Tangkak, SK Simpang Lima Darat relief centre accommodates 70 victims.

In PERAK, the flood situation is improving, with only one relief centre still operational in the Perak Tengah district. Dewan Orang Ramai Teluk Kepayang currently houses 34 victims from 11 families.

The Perak State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that in the Kinta district, all five victims from one family who had been staying at SK St Paul relief centre were allowed to return home this afternoon.

In MELAKA, the flood situation has fully recovered, with the closure of the last relief centre in Jasin district, SK Seri Mendapat, which previously accommodated six victims from two families. The centre was officially closed at 5pm on Tuesday. - Bernama
