Umno rejects party-hopping within the unity govt, says Asyraf Wajdi

PETALING JAYA: Umno will never accept or allow the act of 'party-hopping' by any member of any party within the unity government, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi.

The Umno secretary general commented on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's remarks, confirming initial discussions about the possibility of Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz joining PKR.

"The culture of taking members or leaders from each other's parties will only trigger disputes and conflicts that could jeopardise the stability of the coalition.

"Let us learn from the bitter past experiences in previous political alliances, which led to the collapse of the government due to acts of betrayal and party-hopping, as well as stealing members from each other within the coalition," said Asyraf Wajdi, who is also the unity government chief secretariat, in a statement on Friday (Dec 15).

Earlier in Shah Alam, Anwar, who is also the PKR president, confirmed that discussions are underway about the possibility of Tengku Zafrul joining PKR.

When asked about the matter, Anwar stated that PKR has always maintained an open-door policy, allowing for healthy dialogue and inclusivity in its membership.

Tengku Zafrul, who is the International Trade and Investment Minister, said earlier that he would issue a statement to address the issue.
