DUSSELDORF, Germany, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- As many as 100 companies have won the German sustainability award at a congress held here on Thursday and Friday.

The two-day event, which is devoted to the issue of sustainable development, features speeches by delegates from companies in all kinds of sectors and a total of 100 companies from 100 different sectors were presented with their awards on Thursday evening.

Around 1,000 guests attended the event named "the 17th German Sustainability Award (DNP)."

"The award aims to encourage companies to act sustainably and help to better anchor the principles of sustainable development in public perception," the organiser said in a statement.

"The winners of the DNP Corporate Award are beacons of successful transformation. They not only make concrete contributions, but also inspire and encourage people to strengthen these immensely important impulses and spread them more widely. That is the mission of the DNP," said Stefan Schulze-Hausmann, the DNP initiator and Chairman of the Board of the German Sustainability Award Foundation.

On top of the awards for 100 pioneering companies, four different awards in the transformation fields of nature, society, climate and resources were also handed over to four different companies.

Profiles of up to 3,000 companies have been vetted by 224 experts in order to determine the winners of the awards, said the organiser in a press release.
