The roots of Sri Lankan Tamils

I REFER to the article “Eswaran: We will act against those who defame MAICCI” (The Star, Dec 18), specifically the comments by P. Muguntha (purportedly the president of the Selangor Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) that Sri Lankan Tamils are not people of Indian origin. He made these comments purely to undermine the credentials of the current MAICCI (Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) president Tan Sri Kenneth Eswaran, who is a Sri Lankan Tamil, by stating that MAICCI membership is only open to Malaysians of Indian origin.

I find these politically motivated comments to be offensive, ill-informed and incendiary. They are obviously made by an ignorant man who has run out of political capital.
