In my 20 years in politics and my four terms as a Member of Parliament, never before has a letter caused such inexplicable mayhem in Malaysian politics ("Letters to the King in the spotlight").
I graduated from Universiti Malaya’s Law Faculty in 1988. My legal training ingrained in me the belief that the Federal Constitution is the supreme law of the land. Article 43 of that Constitution clearly states that the Yang DiPertuan Agong appoints the Prime Minister. The King uses his discretion and judgement to decide who is most likely to command the confidence of the majority of MPs in the Dewan Rakyat, or the Lower House in Malaysia’s Parliament.
