PETALING JAYA: Selangor have some of the best midfielders in the game, and for captain Brendan Gan, that is a prospect he is relishing.
It means that the 34-year-old Brendan will now have to compete with the likes of Jordanian international Noor Al-Rawabdeh, Ghana’s Alex Agyarkwa, Venezuelan international Yohandry Orozco, Zahril Azri Zabri, Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi and Aliff Haiqal Lau to fit into coach Tan Cheng Hoe’s plan for the Red Giants challenge in the Super League starting on Feb 24.
But Brendan is looking forward to the challenge.
“Competition is always a great thing as it pushes you to be better at your craft. Some players will go beyond their capacity,” said Brendan.
“We have created competition, not just in midfield but all over the park, and every player has to fight to be in the first eleven.
“Even the national players had to work their socks off for a spot in the Selangor team. It will be a good challenge for sure, and that’s what we are looking for.”
Brendan is one of the most revered midfielders in the country and is a key player for the Red Giants.
His leadership and industry are lauded by many, and he has added versatility to his game as he can play anywhere across the midfield these days.
During the AFF Mitsubishi Cup last year, he also played as a centreback, and he did so with gusto.
Brendan said the current Selangor team have a top squad to challenge for a spot in the continental stage next year and win at least a trophy from any competition.
“It’s a good squad that have been put together by the coaching and management.
“Many of us from last year have gotten a lot of experience and game time.
“We also had a good run in the Malaysia Cup as we reached the final.
“That experience benefited the young guys. They have some measure of experience now, so they need to show and prove their worth for Selangor.”
