Cops on fire but Giants’ big first-leg win takes them through

PETALING JAYA: The Cops shot down Selangor in the second leg but it wasn’t enough to kill them off in the Malaysia Cup.

After carrying a 4-1 lead from the first leg, the Red Giants were beaten 2-1 by Police in the second-leg round of 16 at the Petaling Jaya Stadium here yesterday but they still qualified for the quarter-finals, going through on a 5-3 aggregate.

The tempo of the game wasn’t electric but for the home side, it was enough for the Red Giants.

Selangor first took the lead in the 24th minute when Venezuelan international Yohandry Orozco finished a superb through pass from Jordanian international Noor Al-Rawabdeh.

Eight minutes later, Police drew level when winger Nabil Ahmad Latpi (pic) finished off a simple cutback from Nigerian striker Uche Agba.

Selangor could have had a second in the 89th minute when Ayron Del Valle received a layoff from Richmond Boakye, but his shot was superbly saved by Police goalie Ramadhan Ab Hamid.

If Del Valle had scored, it would have been his 20th goal of the season in all competitions.

Police got their second goal when Dzulfahmi Hadi scored in the 90th minute but it wasn’t enough to get them to the next stage.

Selangor are the most successful team in the Malaysia Cup with 33 titles and their win against Police sees their quest for their 34th still very much on track.
