Italy's Lorenzo Musetti was pushed to a pair of tiebreakers Tuesday before the No. 5 seed earned his way to the second round of the Boss Open at Stuttgart, Germany, with a 7-6 (9), 7-6 (9) victory over qualifier Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France.
Two-time Boss Open champion Matteo Berrettini of Italy also was pushed to the brink before earning a 7-6 (8), 5-7, 7-5 victory over No. 8 seed Roman Safiullin of Russia.
California native Marcos Giron eliminated former world No. 1 Andy Murray with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, while Denis Shapovalov of Canada earned a second-round matchup with Berrettini with a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over Matteo Martineau of France.
Other first-round winners included No. 7 seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, James Duckworth of Australia, Arthur Rinderknech of France and San Diego native Brandon Nakashima.

No. 5 seed Adrian Mannarino of France advanced to the second round at 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, with a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Stefano Napolitano of Italy.
No. 6 seed Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands also advanced with a 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) victory over Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, while Belgium's Zizou Bergs and Canada's Milos Raonic also moved into the second round.
Other first-round winners included: Mackenzie McDonald, Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut, the Netherlands' Gijs Brouwer, France's Arthur Fils, and Australia's Alexei Popyrin and Aleksandar Vukic.
