Just as Lego encourages its fans to submit ideas for new designs, so Nintendo is looking to creative minds for a fresh burst of cardboard origami genius.

Nintendo has come up with a school holiday project for its fans, with the prospect of winning a custom khaki and black cardboard-themed Switch console offered to regional contest winners.

Following the launch of the DIY Nintendo Labo line in April, with which users can assemble robots, fishing rods, pianos, bike handlebars and other novel controller housings, Nintendo is encouraging its fans to come up with new ways to put the kit together.

The mid-year edition of the Nintendo Labo Creators Contest, its second edition, runs from July 19 to Aug 20 through official regional websites such as labo.nintendo.com, nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Labo, nintendo.com.au/labo and nintendo.co.jp/labo and is accepting entries in the categories of "Best Toy-Con Musical Instrument" and "Best Gaming Experience using Toy-Con Garage" (replaced by Kids and Teens / Adults categories in the Australia and New Zealand contest.)

Both groups are to be judged on quality, creativity, and spirit, says Nintendo, with the Musical Instrument challenge also judged according to its sound.

The Labo-themed Switch is one of several grand prizes, along with a grey baseball-style jacket and an award certificate signed by Nintendo Labo developers. Runners-up receive the jacket and a pair of custom Switch controllers.

The Labo Switch is the result of a custom paint design, Nintendo says, without announcing plans for general availability, though it has previously backed official self-adhesive console covers in the style of The Legend Of Zelda, Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Previous winners in similar "Best Decorated Toy-Con" and "Best Toy-Con Mod" contests have included a remote-controlled dinosaur, an analog alarm clock, and a meticulously decorated Zelda-themed piano. — AFP Relaxnews
