PETALING JAYA: Shopee has announced that it will be revising the transaction fee for sellers from 2.0% to 3.5% effective Aug 1.
All transaction fees are also subjected to 8% SST or service tax, making the final transaction fee rate 3.78%.
The company says that all local Marketplace sellers and Mall sellers are charged a transaction fee to cover payment gateaway fees that “apply to all online transactions by the service provider upon successful orders by buyers”.
The transaction fee will be deducted automatically from sellers’ payout when an order is completed.
The announcement has riled up some Internet users, particularly among Shopee sellers.
An online clothing seller who only wanted to be known as Fari said the price revision is quite high.
“This one-time increase will eat into our profit of course. Sellers may end up losing money instead on some lower-priced products. I may have to revise the price for some items and look into other pricing strategies,” she said when contacted by LifestyleTech.
Fari added that she has been a seller on Shopee since 2020.
Another seller, Nadia, felt that it may no longer be feasible for her to continue doing business on Shopee.
"I think it's terrible because I felt that this year there has been other fee increases for sellers on Shopee. I may not want to sell on Shopee anymore as I can ask customers to contact me directly to make payment for items," Nadia said, adding that she has been using Shopee for about five years.
On various Facebook postings and comments, some sellers say they may have to increase the price of goods just to cope with the transaction fee revision.
Apart from the transaction fee, Shopee also charges a commission fee, which varies according to product category and if the seller is on the cashback programme.
It also charges service fees for selected sellers and shipping fees based on shipping channels.
