VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Waste sent to the Luang Namtha provincial landfill site will now be managed by the waste management company Wongpanit Laos, who will use new methods and technology to dispose of waste.
A contract on the management scheme was signed in Luang Namtha province on Sept 16 by the Luang Namtha Provincial Urban Development and Administration Authority (LUDAA) and Wongpanit Laos.
The agreement was signed by the Vice President of LUDAA, Khammy Vongboualom, and the Director of Wongpanit Laos, Kevin Ratsakham, witnessed by officials from the Luang Namtha Provincial Planning and Investment Department, Department of Public Works and Transport, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and related bodies.
Under the contract, waste taken to the Lang Namtha provincial landfill site will be sorted, processed, recycled, and exported by Wongpanit Laos.
The partnership will run from September 2022 until September 2024
Improvement in the management of waste will reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in the landfill due to more efficient management methods, and will also reduce the impact of waste on the environment.
Proper waste removal and processing helps to improve air and water quality as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Since Luang Namtha province has undergone development in recent years, the amount of waste generated has increased significantly and had undesirable impacts.
Proper waste management is aimed at protecting the environment and the health of the local population.
Improper management of waste can lead to poor health in local communities. The most common health problems that people experience because of hazardous industrial waste include respiratory problems, irritable skin, and digestive issues.
This cooperation will minimise the extraction of resources along with reducing pollution and energy consumption which is associated with manufacturing new materials.
In the past, waste was sent to landfills or other designated areas which resulted in negative impacts on the environment, but the new scheme will raise the standard of garbage management and result in a cleaner environment.
