HONG KONG (China Daily/Asia News Network): The Education Bureau suspended classes in all schools in the city on Wednesday (Nov 2) as the Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider raising typhoon signal No 8 around lunchtime due to Tropical Storm Nalgae.
The HKO said in a weather bulletin that Nalgae will be very close to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary on Wednesday, skirting within around 150km to the south of the territory. The Strong Wing Signal No 3 is currently in force.
“Local winds will strengthen further. The Observatory will consider issuing the No 8 Gale or Storm Signal between noon and 2 pm,” the HKO said.
Under the influence of the outer rainbands of Nalgae, showers over the territory are expected to become more frequent and seas are very rough with swells, it added.
At 9am, Nalgae was estimated to be about 230km southeast of Hong Kong and was forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 10kph, edging closer to the vicinity of the area to the west of the Pearl River Estuary.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports, the HKO said.
In a statement, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government reminded Covid-19 patients under home isolation or quarantine and who cannot make their own arrangements for basic necessities to call the “StayHomeSafe” hotline for home delivery services as soon as possible while Signal No 3 is still in force.
In case the Storm Signal No 8 is issued by the HKO, the delivery services and the "StayHomeSafe" hotline will be suspended.
