Philippines: Tropical Storm Paeng death toll hits 160; agricultural and infrastructure damage now at RM900 million

MANILA, Nov 12 (Philippines Daily Inquirer/ANN): The number of reported deaths due to Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) has jumped to 160, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday.

The combined agricultural and infrastructure damage has surpassed pesos 11 billion (RM900 million), the NDRRMC’s latest report showed.

According to the NDRRMC’s latest report, 132 of these reported deaths are confirmed while the rest are being validated.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao still has the highest death toll among the regions with 64 people confirmed dead.

Western Visayas has the second highest death toll at 37 deaths, followed by Calabarzon with 33 deaths, the NDRRMC reported.

Meanwhile, 29 people are still missing and 146 were reported injured, the NDRRMC added.

The number of people affected by Paeng is now 5,410,106, with 25,672 individuals still sheltered in evacuation centers.

Agri, infra damage

Agricultural damage, so far, has been pegged at P6,397,456,211, with 136,843.27 hectares of land damaged and 146,297.7 farmers affected, said the agency.

Damage to infrastructure, including school buildings, roads and bridges has reached P5,435,525,437.88.

There are also still 36 areas without communication lines and 24 others without electricity. - Philippines Daily Inquirer/ANN
