VIENTIANE, Jan 2 (Laotian Times): The Laos Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last week in Vientiane to enable the seasonal employment of Lao workers in South Korea.
The agreement was signed by the Director General of the Department of Employment under the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, Anousone Khamsingsavath, and the Mayor of the Gyeongsangbuk-do district in South Korea, Ki Chang Kwon.
The ceremony also saw attendance from officials of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, led by its Deputy Minister, Phongxaysack Inthalath, and officials from South Korea.
The MOU would primarily focus on sending Lao workers to work in South Korea seasonally in the agriculture and fishery sectors of the country.
This cooperation would not only allow Lao workers to further develop their skills and gain more income, but the entry of foreign exchange salaries would also boost the country’s economy.
According to Vientiane Times, Anousone spoke at the ceremony about a government policy that helps train Lao workers who work in the field of agriculture, particularly in rural areas, to gain more technical knowledge and develop their skills in agricultural production.
She added that the Lao government plans to continue its cooperation with South Korea in the agriculture sector so that Lao workers could learn from the knowledge and experience of South Korean farmers to develop the production capacity and quality of their own country.
So far, the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare has signed a cooperation agreement on seasonal labor deployment with 28 cities in South Korea and has sent a total of 325 Lao workers, including 175 women to work for 90 days or five months in the farming and fishing sectors.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare also issued an official notice earlier this month to warn local laborers not to fall victim to agents of fake companies who would promise them a job in South Korea. - Laotian Times
