BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): A large crowd witnessed the awakening of the lion dance at Teng Yun Chinese Temple on Wednesday (Jan 18) night following an eye-dotting ceremony.
Teng Yun Chinese Temple Executive Committee Chairman Lee Eng Ching along with executive committee members attended the event.
Teng Yun Chinese Temple’s Lion Dance troupe leaders Willis Wong and Paul Tan said, “The team was established in 2020 and we have 20 members aged 13 to 28. We also have two ladies in the troupe who are playing the gong and drum.”
In preparation for this year’s Chinese New Year (CNY), he said, “We have been training for two months. We are fully booked for the upcoming celebration. With the Covid-19 pandemic under control, we hope to give our best performance to the public this year. Our troupe members will wear face masks to give reassurance to the public.”
Willis Wong said the troupe hopes to participate in a traditional lion dance competition in Malaysia this October. The public can visit the temple on the first day of CNY at 7.30am to get a glimpse of the performance.
