Controversial shooting of young man in Chanthabouly is likely due to a business dispute, says Laos police

VIENTIANE, May 6 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Police believe the shooting that occurred in a Vientiane café on Saturday April 29, in which a 25-year-old man was seriously injured, was the result of a business dispute or a love affair gone wrong.

The incident occurred at a coffee shop in Dongmieng village, Chanthabouly district, at around 10:30pm, with the victim named as Anousa “Jack” Luangsuphom.

Deputy Head of the Vientiane Public Security Headquarters, Colonel Oubon Chounlamany, gave a press conference to clarify the situation, saying that after receiving a report of the shooting from the village administration, police and other officials went to the scene of the attack to investigate the incident.

Police learnt that the injured man was Mr Anousa, a Lao national, and that he had been taken to hospital.

Anousa was severely injured after being shot twice at close range. According to Vientiane Rescue, he was shot twice in the face and in the side, with an exit wound through his chest.

CCTV footage posted on social media shows the gunman entering the cafe wearing a mask before opening fire on the victim and then cleaning his fingerprints from the restaurant door handle.

The victim was initially reported to be dead but he survived the attack and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Colonel Oubon said the initial assumption about the shooting is that it was carried out in revenge for an unfair business dealing or a love affair.

Police are conducting enquiries into the incident and trying to determine the possible motive for the attack.

Colonel Oubon called on the public not to sensationalise the case or draw irrational conclusions, but to trust in police investigations with regard to the incident. - Vientiane Times/ANN
