BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 20 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The United Nations (UN) expressed its readiness to support Brunei in implementing its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a keynote speech delivered by UN Resident Coordinator for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Karima El Korri during the Pre-2023 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) workshop, she also touched on the global SDGs progress which is affected by the current world situation.
The 2023 HLPF and the SDGs Summit in September 2023 are expected to set new priorities into the 2030 Agenda including stronger political commitment and global cooperation.
The two-day HLPF workshop was held at the Banquet Hall, Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) organised by the PMO as the Special National Coordination Committee on the SDGs for Brunei.
The workshop opened with remarks from Permanent Secretary (Wawasan) at the PMO as the Chairperson of the Special National Coordination Committee on SDGs Pengiran Hajah Siti Nirmala Pengiran Haji Mohammad.
She expressed appreciation for the support and commitment of stakeholders in supporting the Sultanate’s achievement in the SDGs. She encouraged stakeholders to explore opportunities to enhance the development of SDGs in Brunei through solid collaboration and innovative solutions towards a better future for all.
The workshop was attended by the members and secretariat of the Special National Coordination Committee on the SDGs as well as representatives from the government, UN agencies, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, youth and financial institutions.
The workshop also discussed preliminary findings from the Second Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report for Brunei Darussalam which will be presented to the 2023 HLPF in July 2023.
Various discussions also focussed on the way forward which would help accelerate the SDGs through post-VNR actions. This includes strengthening SDGs ecosystem, data availability and integrated actions for the SDGs.
The Pre-2023 HLPF workshop concluded on Thursday with the presentation of the main outcomes of the workshop followed by the presentation of certificates of appreciation.
The workshop’s main outcomes are proposed priority actions especially in strengthening data monitoring and evaluation, improving the SDGs ecosystem, and promote whole-of-nation actions to build sustainable behaviours and mindset. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
