Cambodian Health ministry reiterates need for Covid-19 vigilance; disease still remains a threat in country

PHNOM PENH, June 12 (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The Ministry of Health has issued reminders that the public should remain vigilant of Covid-19, noting that despite the situation improving, it remains a threat.

The call came from Or Vandine, ministry secretary of state, as she shared the WHO’s five-point guidelines on Covid-19 protection.

“Although the Covid-19 situation has improved, under the ‘new normal’, we need to continue to take steps to protect ourselves,” Vandine, who is also the ministry spokesperson, said on Sunday.

She said the WHO had published its long-term Covid protection measures on Saturday.

“The WHO identified five major areas to curb the spread of the virus.

People should make sure their vaccinations are up to date, avoid crowded or poorly ventilated areas, wash their hands regularly, maintain social distancing, and wear masks if forced to share crowded spaces.

While meeting with more than 16,000 workers in Kandal province on Saturday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said he had planned to meet with them in 2020, but the visit was interrupted by the pandemic.

“I wanted to begin the second round of workers’ meetings in 2020, but the spread of Covid-19, and the necessary measures that were introduced – like compulsory testing – meant it was not possible,” he explained.

According to the health ministry, as of Sunday, Cambodia recorded a total of 138,842 Covid-19 infections, with 135,746 recoveries and 3,056 deaths. — The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
