Cambodia to bar politicians not voting from elections

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen (pic) said on Tuesday (June 13) that the kingdom will amend its election law to ban any politician who does not vote from standing for elections.

Hun Sen said in a speech during a get-together with nearly 20,000 garment factory workers in the Cambodian capital that if politicians do not cast their ballots on general election day, they would have no right to stand for any level of election.

He said it is common people's right to decide whether to go to polls, but for politicians, they must vote, or their right to stand as a candidate in any elections will be revoked.

Cambodia is scheduled to hold a general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23, 2023, the National Election Committee (NEC) said, adding that more than 9.7 million Cambodians have registered to cast their ballots.
