BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Nework): Active weather conditions are expected to last until Sunday (July 16) with occasional gusty heavy thundershowers affecting a number of areas.

Wind speed may reach up to 50 kilometres per hour (kph) over the land areas and up to 60kph over the sea during or near heavy thundershowers.

The Sultanate is currently in the southwest monsoon period, said the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) in a statement on Tuesday (July 11).

However, active weather conditions will persist for the next few days due to the moist atmospheric conditions that enhance the development of rain clouds, the agency added.

The BDMD Observation Station at the Brunei International Airport reported that a total rainfall of 244.6 millimetres (mm) since July 1 has exceeded more than half of the normal value of rainfall for July, which was previously 241.8mm.

Over Brunei waters, sea state is generally slight, between 0.4 and 1.0 metres and is expected to increase to rough state up to 3.0m over the weekend, BDMD said.

The agency said it will continue to monitor the weather conditions and issue weather advisories or warnings if necessary.

The public is advised to take measures and precautionary action to the possibility of active weather conditions. There is risk of flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide.

Rough sea condition are dangerous to small boat operations, sea recreational activities and sports.

The risk of landslide and fallen trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty condition.

The public, road users and fishermen are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by the BDMD and to take action to ensure safety.

The latest weather information can be found on the agency’s mobile app Brunei WX.
