Hong Kong is bracing for its first typhoon of the year, with the No 1 warning signal expected on Saturday morning and temperatures over the weekend set to rise to 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit) from the effects of an approaching tropical depression.
The Observatory on Friday said the weather pattern currently located within 800km (497 miles) of the city was expected to gradually intensify, bringing strong winds from Sunday to Tuesday.

“Depending on the movement and development of the tropical depression, the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No 1 [on Saturday] morning,” the forecaster said.
It added that the possibility of higher alerts depended on the “proximity of the tropical cyclone” to the Pearl River Delta as well as its intensity.

The weather is expected to be sunny and “extremely hot” on Saturday with temperatures reaching as high as 36 degrees, before strong winds hit from Sunday.
Squally showers and thunderstorms are expected next week.
