Laos to expect more natural disasters this year as heavy rains continue

VIENTIANE (Laotian Times): The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has released a notice advising citizens across the country to monitor the weather and prepare for flash flooding and landslides the coming week.

The Ministry issued the warning on Friday stating that from August 4 to August 8, there will be increased precipitation in the northern, central, and southern regions of Laos, leading to moderate and heavy rainfall.

Water levels in the rivers of Nam Khan, Nam Xam, and Nam Ma in Houaphanh Province is expected to rise during the week, while Xaysomboun will see an increase in water levels in Nam Chang and Nam Ao rivers.

Additionally, the levels of water in Nam Xan, the Xe Bang Fai River, and Xe Champhone will increase in the central provinces of Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, and Savannakhet.

Authorities in Xieng Khor District, Houaphanh Province have warned residents along the river of Nam Ma to monitor flooding as a Vietnamese dam is also currently releasing water.

The ministry has urged residents to move their possessions and livestock to safety and follow the weather forecast update from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

This wet season, Savannakhet and the southern provinces have already begun reporting severe flooding, with rescue efforts underway in several areas.

In the last few days, the northern tourist town of Vang Vieng has also seen torrential rainfall and is likely to experience flooding as well. - Laotian Times
