JAKARTA (Bernama-Xinhua): A 5.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Central Sulawesi province in central Indonesia on Sunday, the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.
According to Xinhua, the earthquake happened at 8.44 am Jakarta time (0144 GMT) with its epicentre located 47 km northeast of Sigi district and a depth of 16 km, the agency said.
The tremors of the quake did not potentially trigger a tsunami, it added.
The jolts of the quake were felt weakly in parts of Central Sulawesi province, and so far there were no reports of damages or casualties, including in the hardest-hit area, said Riki Hapri, an officer of the emergency unit of the provincial disaster and mitigation agency.
A 5.6-magnitude quake hit West Java province, on the same island, in November, killing 602 people.
Most of the victims of that earthquake were killed when buildings collapsed or in landslides triggered by the tremor.
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra island in Indonesia on April 3, shaking homes but causing no casualties or damage.
Indonesia straddles the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a highly seismically active zone, where different plates on the Earth’s crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcano activity. - Bernama-Xinhua
