VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): The Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone International Border and Port Construction projects in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province, are expected to be complete at the end of next year, with the aim of attracting more visitors.

Construction of the two projects is underway after beginning on May 5, 2023.

They have been designed with pleasing views of the natural environment and are located on the Mekong River, close to the international border.

The development covers 8,195m and is expected to open for use by the end of 2024, providing faster and more convenient services for visitors.

It comprises a border entry and exit hall, a police office to inspect the papers of people entering and exiting the city, a tax office, a coffee shop, and other facilities. There will be a large parking lot, landscaped with ornamental fountains, trees and flowers.

The gateway to the main office building has been designed in a mix of traditional Lao and modern architectural styles and features images of Lao ethnic groups.

The operators of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone are engaged in extensive infrastructure developments, including the new Bokeo International Airport. Construction of the airport in Tonpheung district is now more than 90 per cent complete and is scheduled to open at the end of this year.

The construction cost of US$175 million is being financed by the Hong Kong-based Greater Bay Area Investment and Development (HK) Limited, which is a member of the Dok Ngiew Kham Group.

The airport will be able to accommodate large aircraft including the Boeing 747 and Airbus 320.

The airport is already operating flights between Vientiane and Bokeo, with return flights available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. International flights will become available when the airport is fully complete.
