BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and other higher learning institutions were called on to provide guidelines to take advantage of the efficiency and productivity that can be obtained from the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and human intelligence.

With the guidelines, it will be possible to expect transparency, integrity and ethical use to prevent the misuse of AI, while strengthening the administration and framework on efforts of the national digital transformation towards shaping the sultanate into a smart nation.

Such developments are needed to be agile and adaptable in response to the evolution that is always developing.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the Chancellor of UBD said this in a decree at the 35th UBD Convocation Ceremony on Monday (Aug 21).

The monarch expressed confidence that the graduates are ready to face the increasingly challenging world with unexpected rapid changes.

AI has brought about huge changes, including in education and legal sectors, which has never been experienced before.

As the oldest university in the sultanate, UBD possesses the capacity to lead in the generation of ideas to take advantage of the positive impacts of AI on society.

The sultan also pointed out that the career world is not exempted from experiencing the constantly changing and unpredictable situation.

In this regard, the monarch welcomed efforts by UBD to build a digital portal for job hunting called ‘CareerBN’ equipped with machine learning and AI capabilities. This, added the Sultan, is seen to be able to facilitate profile management, job notification, job matching and easy access to employers and others.

The monarch also encouraged graduates to explore entrepreneurial opportunities as the field is capable of generating economic growth as well as creating new business and job opportunities.

He acknowledged that UBD has drafted an entrepreneurship blueprint to ensure that the entrepreneurship ecosystem of UBD students is more organised and comprehensive and hopes that the effort will inculcate an entrepreneurship mindset among the students. From here, it will show that a university is capable of the role in creating or co-creating the future of excellent students aligned with UBD’s tagline of ‘Futuring Together’.

On this note, the Sultan reminded UBD to emphasise to its graduates that their activities are not only beneficial to themselves but also to contribute to the nation, religion and country.
