Brunei-Australia military relations reaffirmed; both countries also sign new defence partnership deal

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Brunei Ministry of Defence received an official visit from the Chief of the Defence Force, Australian Defence Force (ADF) General Angus John Campbell, AO, DSC, at Bolkiah Garrison.

General Angus John Campbell inspected the guard of honour comprising Royal Brunei Land Force personnel before paying a courtesy call on Minister at The Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Halbi Mohd Yussof.

The minister and General Angus John Campbell underlined the close and long-standing friendship in the field of defence, contributing to the strength of diplomatic relations between the two countries, especially through the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine initiative, which the two countries co-chaired from 2021 to 2024.

General Angus John Campbell also met separately with the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Major General Dato Paduka Seri Muhammad Haszaimi Bol Hassan.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitments to continue strengthening their bilateral military relations, towards contributing to the peace and stability of the region.

In the field of defence, Brunei Darussalam and Australia signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation on May 10, 1999. The two countries enjoy a close and longstanding bilateral defence relationship including visits, professional exchanges, exercises, training and courses.
