PHNOM PENH (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The Cambodian Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings to residents of the Kingdom’s coastal regions.
A period of sustained rainfall is predicted to occur between September 1-4, with maritime conditions expected to be turbulent, with strong winds and high seas.
The ministry urged all members of the public to exercise caution, particularly those residing in areas prone to flooding or working at sea.
An August 30 announcement by the ministry detailed the upcoming weather conditions.
“According to our monitoring, we forecast that, coastal areas will experience a series of moderate to heavy rain from September 1-4, accompanied by thunder, lightning, strong winds and high seas,” the notice warned.
The announcement emphasised the need for vigilance, especially in weather-sensitive areas.
Soth Kimkolmony, spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management, was unavailable for comment on August 30.
On August 30, Long Dimanche, deputy governor of Preah Sihanouk province, confirmed that the provincial administration had received the weather advisory.
He said local authorities will share the warning with residents, especially fishermen, who rely upon information from the provincial level.
Weather conditions can sometimes change abruptly, making it unsafe for vessels to put to sea, whether to fish or transport passengers, he added, with caution necessary to ensure the safety of locals, as well as tourists.
“Preah Sihanouk boasts a multitude of stunning islands and beaches, making it a sought-after destination for tourists, both domestic and international – and it is vital we take diligent measures to ensure their safety,” Dimanche said.
He noted that the meteorology ministry’s advisory had helped prepared the provincial authorities to take extra precautions and be ready for any unexpected events, adding that emergency response units remained on standby. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
