PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/Asia News Network): The Japanese embassy in Phnom Penh is set to host a three-day orchestral concert series from Sept 15-17 at the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Centre (CJCC).

The event marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the countries and is being organised in partnership with the Japan Foundation’s Phnom Penh liaison office.

As part of the non-profit Worldship, founded in Tokyo in 2014, Worldship Orchestra (WSO) will conduct the performance.

WSO aims to offer children their first symphonic experience and is currently involved in overseas performances, targeting Asian children with education in the arts and music.

“We hope attendees will enjoy the function and feel a deeper connection with Japan through the music. The event aims to enhance mutual understanding between the two nations,” stated the embassy.

Kin Phea, director of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, emphasised the multifaceted nature of the ties.

“In addition to economic and political affiliations, cultural and people-to-people connections are crucial,” he said.

Phea believes the concert will serve as an avenue to familiarise young citizens with Japanese culture, thereby strengthening the bilateral partnership.

The director added that the two nations recently elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

“Japan is a key ally of Cambodia, providing development aid, humanitarian assistance and serving as an intermediary between the Kingdom and the West,” Phea stated.

He added that Japan also seeks to expand its influence in the Indo-Pacific region, with Asean as a focal point.

“Political, social, economic, cultural and geopolitical factors will continue to encourage both parties to further deepen their cooperation and relations,” Phea added.
