VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): The government, in cooperation with Impact Energy Asia Limited, will build a 1,000MW wind farm, named the Xekong Wind Farm Project, in Lamam and Dak Cheung districts of Xekong province.
A document agreeing to the development of the wind farm was signed on Sept 8 by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Khamchan Vongsenboun and the Director of Impact Energy Asia Limited, Paradai Suebma.
The total project comprises the 600MW Monsoon Wind Farm and the 1,000MW Xekong Wind Farm.
Work on the Monsoon Wind Farm is already under way and is expected to be completed and generate electricity in 2025.
An agreement has been signed on the purchase and sale of electricity to Vietnam.
When the Monsoon Wind Farm is operational, authorities will build the 1,000MW Xekong Wind Farm, which is expected to be complete in 2028.
The two wind farms will have a total installed production capacity of 1,600MW. The use of clean and renewable energy sources will support efforts to combat global warming.
During the expected lifetime of the wind farms, the emission of 90 million tons of carbon dioxide will be prevented.
The project also supports the government’s vision to develop Laos as the powerhouse of Asia by generating substantial amounts of energy from hydro, solar and wind sources, for transmission to countries in the region.
