PHNOM PENH (Phnom Peng Post/ANN): Brazil is slated to open an embassy in Cambodia in 2024, as both countries prepare to celebrate their 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

The pledge of closer relations came as Brazil’s foreign minister Mauro Vieira paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace on October 11, as part of his three-day official visit to Cambodia.

Both discussed a wide range of issues during the meeting, according to Manet’s social media post.

Vieira congratulated Manet on taking the top office, and highlighted Brazil’s intention to increase its cooperation with the Kingdom in several sectors, including trade, education, healthcare and cultural exchanges.

“During the meeting, Vieira expressed his appreciation for Cambodia’s decision to open an embassy in Brazil. He also informed Manet that as the two celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Brazil will open an embassy in Cambodia,” said the post.

Vieira also thanked Cambodia for backing Brazil to become sectoral dialogue partner of Asean during the 40th and 41st Asean Summit, held in Phnom Penh in 2022.

Manet welcomed the planned celebrations and the opening of the embassy. He told Vieira that his government is committed to expanding cooperation with Brazil, and spoke highly of the bilateral relation between the two countries.

“The prime minister expressed his hopes that bilateral relations between the two nations will grow further,” added the post.

During the talks, Manet and Vieira agreed to expand cooperation on tourism, agriculture and people-to-people connections, while also touching on other areas of common interests.

After receiving Vieira’s invitation to pay an official visit to Brazil, Manet extended an invitation to Brazilian President Lula da Silva to visit Cambodia in 2024, during the celebrations of diplomatic ties. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
