BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Brunei Film Blitz recently presented films from Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia at the Mahakarya Institute of the Arts Asia and The Mall Cineplex.

Organisers said the Brunei Film Blitz screenings provided an opportunity for movie-goers to experience national cinema.

“Unlike globalised commercial cinema, national cinema is indicative of the culture, values and norms of a specific country,” said event organisers in a statement.

“This year, the theme for the international screenings is ‘Retrospective’, where we exhibit the development of each country’s national cinema over a period of time.”

Festival director Siti Kamaluddin said, “Having an understanding on the progress of the film industry in each country is a pivotal function of the Brunei Film Blitz. It shows us that though our challenges are different, we all have one thing in common- our love for films.”

Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Marian Jocelyn R Tirol-Ignacio welcomed the Filipino filmmakers at the screenings.

Audience members were taken into the Filipino culture, heritage and way of life through three internationally acclaimed movies: Angkas by Rain Yamson III, The Baseball Player by Carlo Obispo and Ginhawa by Christian Lat.

Meanwhile, the screening of Thai films at Mahakarya Institute of the Arts Asia, was attended by Thai Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Boosara Kanchanalai. The film screenings include Butterfly and Flowers directed by Euthana Mukdasanit and You & Me & Me by Wanweaw Hongvivatana.

Another film screened during the first day was Indonesian film Qodrat directed by Charles Gozali. - Brunei Bulletin/ANN
