Over 80 killed, 301 injured in Yangon-Mandalay highway accidents in 11 months


YANGON: A total of 82 people were killed, and 301 others injured in 151 traffic accidents on Myanmar's Yangon-Mandalay highway within 11 months of this year, Deputy Sheriff of Highway Police Office Myo Lin Thant told Xinhua on Tuesday (Dec 12).

From Jan. 1 to Nov. 30, 2023, the dead included 58 males and 24 females, while the injured included 167 males and 134 females, he said.

The cost of the damage incurred was estimated at over 400 million kyats (over US$190,476), he added.

Human errors such as overspeeding, reckless driving and drowsy driving are common factors in highway accidents in the country, the deputy sheriff said. - Xinhua
