BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is ranked in the top 400 in the world and top 100 in Asia in the QS ranking.

In the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, UBD is in the top 401-500 in the world. THE also ranked UBD subjects as world top 301-400 in engineering and technology, social sciences, and education, world top 401- 500 in business and economics as well as world top 501-600 in physical sciences.

In the QS Sustainability ranking, UBD secured 629th place out of over 1,200 universities – 162nd in Asia and number one in the Sultanate.

The latest achievements underscoring UBD’s continued commitment to academic excellence, research and sustainability was shared by UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri Kifle in his address during the opening of UBD Freshers’ Week yesterday at the Chancellor Hall.

Two hundred and forty-six students enrolled in the 2023/2024 session, of which 28 are pursuing PhD, 123 for Master’s degree, 68 for degree and 28 under the UniBridge programme.

“UBD has an important role in empowering and strengthening students to become graduates who possess skills with moral values,” said Dr Hazri.

Symbolising UBD’s commitment as a leading university, the vice-chancellor introduced the university’s core values ‘LEAD’: ‘Learner’s First’ prioritises each student’s unique needs and well-being, creating a personalised, inclusive and supportive learning environment to ensure every learner’s success and satisfaction at UBD; ‘Elevate’ signifies a dedication to raising standards and pursuing excellence; ‘Agent of Change’ represents UBD’s commitment to creating positive impact and meaningful transformations; and ‘One UBD’ embodies unity and collaboration, fostering a conducive learning environment.

He also urged UBD community members, especially new students, to seize opportunities for learning, experiencing and growing together.

“I encourage you to be adventurous, try new things and choose modules that expose you to new ideas and new ways of thinking. Your faculty will be your guide in your journey in UBD.

"Talk to them, ask them about your programme, modules, lectures, research, well-being and so on. You will make new friends, join clubs, perform works of art, play sports and travel abroad. Let us create a dynamic environment where diverse perspectives contribute to our collective advancement.”

He added, “Newly-enrolled students have now stepped into a new world that promises various experiences, challenges, sweet and bitter memories in the effort to obtain qualification.

“I believe many students will feel excited and enthusiastic and there are also definitely some who feel nervous. Students should feel fortunate to be selected to enrol in UBD.

Therefore, take advantage of this golden opportunity as best as possible to achieve success.” – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
