Myanmar navy seizes 1.45 tonnes of narcotic drugs

YANGON: Myanmar navy has seized 1.45 tonnes of methamphetamine (ICE) in its territorial waters, according to the country's Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) late Thursday (Jan 11).

The country's authorities confiscated the drugs on Jan 4 while they searched a wooden boat in Myanmar's territorial waters, approximately 135 miles southeast of Hainggyikyun Township of Ayeyarwady Region, the CCDAC said.

Initial investigations showed that the drugs were intended for transportation to foreign countries through Kawthoung, it said.

The confiscated drugs are worth over 36.25 billion kyats (over US$17 million), and five offenders were already arrested for the case, it said.

A total of seven suspects, including five offenders arrested, were charged under the South-East Asian country's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Further investigation was underway. - Xinhua
