VIENTIANE: The Voice of Vietnam (VOV), the Vietnamese state-run national radio broadcaster, on Tuesday (Jan 30) handed over equipment that will improve the operations of Lao National Radio.

In a ceremony attended by officials from both broadcasters, led by Laos’ Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Mr Phosy Keomanivong and Vice President of the Voice of Vietnam, Tran Minh Hung, signed a project agreement, witnessed by senior officials from the two sides.

Phosy said the Lao broadcaster would make good use of the equipment and maintain it carefully.

The partnership between the two state-run radio stations will support social and economic development in Laos, benefit the general public, and assist the government in its broadcasting endeavours as well as upgrade the technical standards of Lao National Radio, he added.

The two radio stations are working hand in hand to modernise Laos’ information, culture and tourism sector from 2021 to 2025 by introducing more digital broadcasting systems.

The Lao media industry is employing new and modern tactics that enable members of the public to get news reports more quickly and clearly so they are better informed and can pass on news to other communities across the country, acting as mediators between the Party and government and the people, Mr Phosy said.

He thanked the Vietnamese government for their support and expressed appreciation for the efforts of VOV and other entities in Laos and Vietnam for ensuring the success of the radio modernisation project, which is taking place as Lao National Radio marks its 64th anniversary.

The radio station acts as the voice of the Party and government in publicising policies, development plans, new regulations, and other information that benefits people of all ethnic groups, Phosy said, keeping Lao citizens informed as well as people in other countries.

The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism’s strategy to develop the information sector will continue until 2025.

An agreement on the upgrade of the technical operations of Lao National Radio was signed in Vientiane with the Voice of Vietnam in October 2018. In February 2019, Laos’ Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and the Voice of Vietnam signed another agreement to perpetuate the upgrade. - Vientiane Times/ANN
