Myanmar's famous Thingyan festival in Nay Pyi Taw to feature top K-Pop stars, says govt


YANGON (Eleven Media Group/ANN): The Myanmar junta government announced on Sunday that the country's famous Thingyan Festival will feature top K-pop stars and renowned artists from Asia in this year's celebration.

This is also in conjunction of the fact that the traditional Thingyan festival (water festival) was submitted to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in March 2023 and the approval comes through at the end of this year, Aye Aye Thin, director of the National Museum of Myanmar (Nay Pyi Taw) thas announced.

The Thingyan festival, the most significant annual festival in Myanmar, has been held since ancient times.

Water festival is called Thingyan in Myanmar and is celebrated in the middle of April.

Myanmar Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, head of the Nay Pyi Taw Walking Thingyan organizing committee, revealed plans to feature performances by K-pop stars and renowned Asian artists at the central pavilion of the walking Thingyan festival in Nay Pyi Taw.

The announcement came during a coordination meeting aimed at ensuring the success of the Walking Thingyan festivities in Nay Pyi Taw as part of the 2024 Myanmar traditional Thingyan Festival which was held at the Ministry of Information Assembly Hall.

U Maung also said this year's event will be a bosterous and joyous due to the Unesco recognition and nit will be an unforgetable experience for locals and foreign tourists.

Furthermore, he underscored ongoing coordination with the Nay Pyi Taw Council to maximize attendance at the Walking Thingyan event. As a highlight, the central pavilion will see participation from Boss and Jobs Company alongside Korean firms.

Ministries are also dedicated to enhancing employee happiness throughout the Myanmar New Year celebrations, encouraging widespread participation for a truly festive atmosphere.

The Minister added the list of top musicians for the event will be announced during a special international press conference before the festival next month. - Eleven Media Group/ANN
