Myanmar's oldest zoo in its 118th year still attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually


YANGON (Xinhua): Yangon Zoological Garden, the oldest zoo in Myanmar, attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually, the state-run media Myanmar Radio and Television reported on Sunday.

Established in 1906, the zoo celebrated its 118th birthday in January 2024.

The Yangon Zoological Garden is home to over 136 species and over 2,000 animals, including endangered species such as Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and leopards.

At present, the zoo has 45 species of mammals, 72 species of birds and 19 species of reptiles, amounting to over 136 species

The Yangon Zoological Garden, opened in January 1906, provides visitors with education about wild animals and relaxation, allowing visitors to witness the behaviors of the animals and their habits, Warden of the Yangon Zoological Garden Than Myint Tun told Xinhua.

Students can study botany and zoology, Than Myint Tun said, adding that the zoo also supports breeding programmes to preserve endangered species. - XInhua
