Laos local authorities warn of chemical leak into river; people warned from using water from Nga River

VIENTIANE (Bernama-Xinhua): Authorities in northern Laos' Oudomxay province circulated a notice warning people living in Xay and Nga districts not to use or drink water from the Nga River.

The Oudomxay provincial Natural Resources and Environment Department issued a warning following an accident of a tanker carrying an unspecified acid overturned near the river on Sunday, Xinhua quoted a Lao national TV report on Thursday.

The tanker overturned near the Nga River and there was a high risk that the spilled acid could run into the river and kill fish and other aquatic species, as well as buffalo. Residents have been advised not to eat or sell any dead fish.

The Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and other authorities are assisting with efforts to address the situation, including checking water quality, according to the report. - Bernama-Xinhua
