Vietnam wants UN and Asean coordinate closely, effectively over Myanmar issue

NEW YORK (Bernama-VNA): Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, had a meeting with UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, during her working visit to New York.

Congratulating Bishop on her appointment as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Giang believed that with her rich diplomatic experience and deep understanding of the region, Bishop will successfully fulfil this role, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

Giang emphasised that the top priority now is to build trust, promote ceasefire and dialogue, and facilitate humanitarian relief activities.

He affirmed that Asean’s five-point consensus continues to be an important basis for efforts to find peaceful and sustainable solutions.

The Vietnamese diplomat hoped that the UN and Bishop, in particular, will coordinate closely and effectively with ASEAN and the Special Envoy of the Asean Chair on Myanmar in the principles of respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs, in accordance with the will and aspirations of the Myanmar people.

Bishop affirmed that she will try her best to contribute to bringing peace and stability to Myanmar. She emphasised that the UN supports Asean's leading role in this process.

Appreciating Vietnam's position in the UN and in Asean, as well as its constructive approach to the Myanmar issue in particular, Bishop hoped that Vietnam will continue to promote its role and make positive contributions to the joint efforts towards achieving a comprehensive, long-term solution to the current crisis in Myanmar. - Bernama-VNA
