Brunei students shine at Asean Schools Games

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Student athletes from the Sultanate won two medals and broke national records in this year’s 13th Asean Schools Games 2024.

Md Azinuddin Md Azree won the silver medal in pencak silat tanding category ‘C’ (boy) while Nursyakirah Mawaddah Mohd Fauzi won the bronze medal in pencak silat seni tunggal puteri.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Abbas bin Abdullah broke the national record (9:48.21s) in athletics (3,000m) with a time of 9:41.92s. In swimming, Hayley Wong Ann Yue broke the national record (28.07s) in the freestyle swimming event (50m) with a time of 27.94s and jointly held the national record (1:19.74s) in the breaststroke swimming (100m).

The closing ceremony of the 13th Asean Schools Games 2024 was held at the Tien Son Sports Palace in Danang, Vietnam on Sunday (June 9).

Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Azman Ahmad and Director of Co-curriculum Education Julaihi Mohamad, as chef-de-mission of the contingent of Schools Sports Council Brunei Darussalam (MS SSBD), attended the event.

The ceremony was enlivened by performances from Trung Vuong Theatre members followed by a march past of athletes from participating countries.

Member of the City Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Da Nang City Le Quang Nam delivered a welcoming address while Vietnam Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, as the head of the organising committee of the 13th Asean Schools Games, declared the Games closed.

The ceremony’s highlight was the handover of the Asean Schools Sports Council (ASSC) flag by Nguyen Thi Kim Chi to Dr Azman, representative of Brunei Darussalam, the hosting country of the 14th Asean Schools Games (ASG14) 2025.

Attendees also viewed a short video showcasing sports in ASG14 2025 and concluded with an appreciation to the hosting country, Vietnam, and a welcoming speech to the contingent of next year’s ASG14.

MS SSBD participated in five sports, including swimming, athletics, basketball, badminton and pencak silat. This year was the 12th participation by MS SSBD since 2009. It is an annual programme in the MS SSBD and the Department of Co-curriculum Education’s calendar.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri Kifle and Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Corporate) at the MoE Professor Dr Noor Azam OKMB thman were also present. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
