Hanoi police bust cannabis trafficking ring, seize over 700kg

HANOI: A sophisticated gang shipping cannabis across Ha Noi has been smashed by police in the capital city.

The Drug Crime Investigation Police Department have arrested eleven people and seized more than 700kg of the drug.

Police first became aware of the illegal activities back in February when they were monitoring drug transportation routes.

They learned couriers without criminal records had been hired to ship packages of cannabis around the city that had been vacuum sealed to avoid any odours.

Three separate task forces were established to make the arrests.

The first took four people into custody including Hoang Van Ha, one of the ring leaders, from Van Yen District of Yen Bai Province and living in Me Tri Ward, Nam Tu Liem District.

They also recovered 90.49kg of cannabis, six electronic scales, one heat gun, one vacuum packing machine and other related items and documents.

The second task force arrested Vu Hong Cuc, at his address in Ly Thai To, Hoan Kiem District and confiscated 74.04kg of cannabis, one electronic scale and other related items.

The third task force arrested six people, including another ringleader, Huynh Huu Hoang, from Cam Lam District of Khanh Haa Province and residing in Vinh Cuu District of Dong Nai Province.

It was here they seized the largest amount of cannabis with 600kg, one vacuum packing machine, six hydraulic presses and three electronic scales.

At the police station, the suspects confessed to their criminal activities.

The authorities are expanding their investigation and pursuit of the case to apprehended others connected to the ring. – Vietnam News/ANN
