YANGON (Xinhua): Myanmar is working to seek an Asean special status for its Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary located in the Bago division in the southern central part of the South-East Asian country.
Dr Kyaw Zin Win Tun, assistant director of the Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division under the Forest Department, said this on Monday.
The official told Xinhua an Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) heritage park status may secure more chances for international cooperation and cooperation under the ASEAN framework for the protected area.
There are currently over 50 Asean heritage parks, and Myanmar hosts eight of them, according to him.
The Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary covering an area of 103.6 sq. km. features 120 species of mammals, 28 species of amphibious and reptiles, 33 species of insects, 59 species of hibernated birds, 77 species of domestic birds, 44 species of fish, and 74 species of aqua plants, according to a report by the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper. - Xinhua
