Four people arrested after haul of suspected chemicals, weapons found near Hong Kong school

Four people have been arrested after suspected chemicals and weapons were found near a Hong Kong school.

The haul was discovered at around 3pm on Tuesday after two workers, who were mowing grass behind the Kwun Tong branch of the Institute of Vocational Education, noticed part of a wire mesh had been cut open.

The pair then spotted two men burning objects nearby and when they confronted them, the latter fled the scene. The workers called police afterwards.

The force seized weapons and equipment such as axes, military knives and wire cutters at the scene. Many bottles containing unknown liquids, funnels, containers and burned wood were also discovered there.

Bomb disposal and counterterrorism officers were also called in to secure the scene and process the items.

A police source said about 20 bottles containing suspicious chemicals were being tested by the bomb experts.

Police said earlier they were searching for two men aged 15 to 20 in connection with the case.

The source said the four people had been arrested as investigations were under way.
